The All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory -
Alive and Well in the Great Smoky Mountains

  • The All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI), a project of Discover Life in America (DLIA), seeks to inventory the estimated 100,000 species of living organisms in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

  • The project will develop checklists, reports, maps, databases, and natural history profiles that describe the biology of this rich landscape to a wide audience.

  • The species level of biological diversity is central to the ATBI, but the project is developed within an ecological and conservation context and encourages understanding at other levels of organization, including genetic variation within species and ecosystem descriptions.

Role of the ATBI Role of the ATBI
  • Inventory the estimated 100,000 species of living organisms in the Park
  • Develop data and natural history profiles describing the biology of the Park.
Species New to Science New Species
  • Species new to science are ones that have never been formally identified and described.
  • New records to the Park are species that were previously known to science but until now had not been found in the Smokies.
Quarterly Newsletter Quarterly Newsletter
  • The ATBI Quarterly Newsletter focuses on scientific research.
  • ATBI Quarterly newsletters are available in .pdf format.
Science Methods Science Methods
  • Conduct research using a wide variety of field methods including Bio-Quests and Fern Forays.
  • “Pilot Study” established 19 plots one hectare in size.
Taxonomic Working Groups (TWIGs) Taxonomic Working Groups (TWIGs)
  • Organizes the efforts of scientists working with various taxa.
  • Composition based on taxonomic order or combined into broader groups.

Discover Life in America is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization working
with the National Park Service to conduct an All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) or
all species inventory in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Protocols and methodologies
developed in the Smokies will be used to conduct ATBIs in other national park ecosystems
and natural lands around the world.
